The Savannah was the first nuclear powered cargo/passenger ship in the world, built by the NY Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, USA. She was launched in March 1962 and thus demonstrated for the first time the technical possibilities of nuclear powered merchant vessels. However, it was never the intention to be commercially competitive. The Savannah had a capacity of 14,000 tons and could accommodate 60 passengers and a 124 men crew. The cruising speed was 21 knots and the fuel store was sufficient for an uninterrupted stretch of 336,000 nautical miles (622,608 km). For passenger operation she even had comfortable rooms, a cinema, a library and a swimming pool. The Savannah was taken out of service in 1972.

A superb model kit of the widely used pre-fabricated WWII Liberty ship, modelled on the preserved SS Jeremiah O'Brien, based in San Francisco, but also attending major WWII rememberance events. The model has three pre-coloured hull sections, with alternative full hull or waterline baseplate enabling either type of model to be constructed with ease. There are 268 parts in total, which can be used to build the ship in its wartime configuration, or in peace time service as a general cargo ship. Glue and paint required to complete.

The RNLI is a voluntary organisation, supported only by public subscription and donations, dedicated to assisting mariners in difficulty around the British coastline. The Lifeboat and lifeboat station is a feature of many coastal towns, while these larger boats serve from major ports. Sturdy and stable sea boats with self righting characteristics, able to protect their crews in the worst of storms.

Airfix plan to make this kit as accurate and detailed as possible. This has resulted in the kit becoming heavily delayed in development.
