 more | Corgi 1/50 Birney Safety Car Steinway Lines New York (US55202) The Queens borough of New York City was where the renowned piano manufacturer William Steinway had his manufacturing facility and operated his own streetcar system. The Third Avenue Railway leased him 25 used J.G. Brill Birney Cars to operate his system. These cars operated on Steinway Lines from 1930-1939, when they were returned to Third Avenue Railway for other assignments. However, streetcars continued to operate in the Queens borough until 1957 and were to become New York City's last streetcar operation.

PRT and PTC at one time owned and operated a total of 25 Birney Cars. These cars were operated on short feeder routes in Chester county such as Routes 76,14,62,78, and 71. PRT/PTC also operated Birney cars on Route 59 on Castor Avenue in the Northeast section of Philadelphia. All of these lines were eventually converted to bus; however, in the case of Route 59, the Birney cars were replaced by larger, two-truck, double-end Peter Witt-type cars, which were eventually replaced by Electric Trolly Buses. | |
